Debunking Myths About Feminism
Common Misconceptions:
-All feminists hate men/ anything associated with men
-Feminists are trying to take over the world
-All feminists are lesbians
-Feminists don't care about their appearances
-Women are "equal enough" to men
-Women make the same amount of money as men
-Women can't be leaders because they need to raise children
-Gender determines who we should be in relationships with
-All feminists are radical
-Women choose to forsake their academic careers to raise their kids
Reality:
-Feminists are simply trying to ensure that women have the same rights that men do
-Women make up 51% of the American population, but Congress is only %17 female
-The wage gap is alive and well- women make 81 cents to every dollar men make, so feminists are working to equalize salaries across the board
-Women are sexualized by the media, but are shamed if they wear something revealing... very paradoxical
-We are born a certain sex, gender is societally constructed, and feminism is about embracing who you want to be despite gender roles
-Men can be feminists, too!
